Lizz Wright 11/14/03 - Orpheum Theatre
Atlanta jazz singer and songwriter, Lizz Wright, has given the
jazz scene a new face and voice. With her captivating appeal, stage
composure and friendly audience demeanor, it's obvious that Wright is a
natural born performer. In part, Wright developed those abilities through
serving as both her church's pianist and musical director. It was also at
church where she picked up her gospel style of singing and songwriting. Her
expressive true-to-life song lyrics showcase the dimensions of her rich,
velvety alto tones. Her debut CD, Salt, features five Lizz Wright originals, which is an exception in the world of female jazz vocalists. You can expect to hear a lot more
from this young talented jazz singer as she makes a name for herself.
This presentation is supported by the Heartland Arts Fund, a program of Arts Midwest funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and with additional contributions from General Mills Foundation, Land O' Lakes Foundation, Sprint Corporation, and the South Dakota Arts Council.

Simon and Bruce Springsteen.

Kelly Joe Phelps 2/6/04 Orpheum Theatre
Slide guitarist, Kelly Joe Phelps has been called an improvisational master.
The music of his songs change each time he plays them, while only the lyrics
remain the same. His songwriting has been likened to storytelling and his
slide guitar playing has been called sheer wizardry. The Washington State
native continually tries to explore new ground, whether it's emphasizing his
slide guitar talents, showcasing his songwriting abilities, or collaborating
with other musicians. With five albums, none of which sound the same or
cover the same material, we can attest to that.

Cassandra Wilson 3/16/04 Orpheum Theatre
Glamoured is a Gaelic word meaning to be whisked away, says vocalist and songwriter Cassandra Wilson, explaining the title of her new CD. "It's like being in a daydream, those split seconds when you're transfixed and your eyes don't move and you have to shake yourself out of it. This album captures the feeling of that reverie."
Indeed, Wilson sets such a mood with her trademark mix of first-rate originals and adventurous covers of other songwriters' works, this time picking material by Sting, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Muddy Waters and Abbey Lincoln. Such eclectic tastes come naturally to Wilson, who began her musical career performing in and around her hometown of Jackson, Mississippi. "Down South, musicians have to be able to play in many different circumstances and in many contexts," she says. "They have to play jazz, they have to integrate the blues, and they have to know country. And the lines are kinda blurry sometimes, 'cause that's what everybody wants to hear."
For the recording of Glamoured Cassandra once again returned to her hometown of Jackson, Mississippi with a list of good songs and an open mind. "For some albums, I'll have a very clear idea of where I want it to go," she says, "but this time I had questions about what kinds of sounds to explore."
You won't want to miss this sultry singer...

Joyce Cooling 3/27/04 Orpheum Theatre
Self-taught guitarist, singer and songwriter Joyce Cooling
picked up the guitar on a whim, after hearing Wes Montgomery's solo on "If
You Could See Me Now." In 1997, she made her debut with the album Playing
It Cool, which quickly shot up to number one, in the smooth jazz category on
the Gavin Report and Radio & Records NAC jazz charts. That same year,
Cooling was named Best New Talent in smooth jazz in the Jazziz Reader's Poll
and was chosen as Artist of the Year by the radio show Jazz Trax. Her 1999
album, Keeping Cool won her the Best Jazz Guitarist of the Year Gibson
Guitar Award. Cooling has just recently released her fourth record, Third
Wish, which is expected to earn her more awards. Not bad, for someone who
started playing guitar on pure chance and inspiration.
