All month we’ve been celebrating with a feature song and artist on Friday. Today we are pleased to select on of the greatest singers ever.
Ella Fitzgerald had her birthday yesterday. She would have turned 100 years old having been born April 25 in 1917. She was one of the fastest rising stars of the swing era when Chick Webb hired her to sing in his band at the Savoy Ballroom at the age of 17. And she never looked back. She became one of the most beloved and best singers of the last century.
Here’s our tune for this final week of JAM. The music was written by Harold Arlen, the lyrics by Johnny Mercer, for a 1941 film begun with the working title Hot Nocturne, but finally released as Blues in the Night. Ella Fitzgerald had nothing to do with this movie, but she made the song her own.
Enjoy Blues In the Night and we hope to see you Saturday night at the Crawl! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5oW0hopdqY
